Nancy Pelosi, Catholic Without a Clue

by Elizabeth Lev
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi seems to be planning a second career as a theologian. Unfortunately, she never gets one Catholic fact right. Interviewed by Eleanor Clift for Newsweek's year-end issue, Pelosi capped an 18-month succession of clamorously incorrect public statements about what Catholics believe with her own take on the meaning of freedom.
Asked about her "brushes" with church hierarchy, Pelosi responded, "I have some concerns about the church's position respecting a woman's right to choose. I have some concerns about the church's position on gay rights. I am a practicing Catholic, although they're probably not too happy about that. But it is my faith. I practically mourn this difference of opinion because I feel what I was raised to believe is consistent with what I profess, and that is that we are all endowed with a free will and a responsibility to answer for our actions. And that women should have that opportunity to exercise their free will."
Pelosi's Catholic-lite construct here suggests that free will means the ability to judge what is right and wrong, with each person's conscience being the final arbiter. Coherency in her concept of Catholic teaching would mean legalizing rape and murder and allowing each person to choose and then take responsibility for his or her own actions. More than the far left liberal that many claim her to be, Pelosi seems to favor anarchy.

Coherency in her concept of Catholic teaching would mean legalizing rape and murder and allowing each person to choose and then take responsibility for his or her own actions. More than the far left liberal that many claim her to be, Pelosi seems to favor anarchy.
Had Pelosi chosen to do a minimum of research before speaking, she might have consulted the users' manual for the Catholic Church, the Catechism, which some American bishop or other must have sent her as a stocking-stuffer this year. There our aspiring theologian would have found a different definition. Freedom, according to the Catholic Church, (CCC article 3) is the person's ability to choose between good and evil. He can choose to do something good or something evil but he cannot choose to make evil good. To take responsibility for one's actions is to recognize that one has chosen evil and to accept the consequences both in this world and the next.
The position of the Catholic Church is that abortion, the taking of an innocent human life, is intrinsically evil.
Pelosi has long been in need of remedial CCD -- religious education -- classes. During the 2008 presidential campaign, she handed the bishops' conference the proverbial softball over the plate when she responded in a Meet the Press interview to the question of whether life begins at conception with, "I would say that as an ardent, practicing Catholic, this is an issue that I have studied for a long time. And what I know is, over the centuries, the doctors of the church have not been able to make that definition."
Even the most somnolent bishops leapt out of their episcopal thrones at that one, happy to cite Embryology 101 textbooks stating the basic scientific fact that human life begins at conception. The real question, they retorted, is whether one places any value on that life. Pelosi's riposte was to ignore the life question altogether, declaring that one way or the other, "it shouldn't have an impact on the woman's right to choose." Is Pelosi's church the church of choice, or Christ?
On February 18, Pelosi came to Rome, where she demanded to meet Pope Benedict XVI, hoping for a few photos to show her running with the theological big dogs and shine up her Catholic credentials. When no photo-ops were granted, Pelosi did a little history rewrite, issuing a press release recounting her friendly banter with Benny over global warming and fighting poverty. After all, who would know what they really talked about? But she underestimated the then-81-year-old pontiff, who beat her to the punch by sending a statement of his own.
"His Holiness took the opportunity to speak of the requirements of the natural moral law and the Church's consistent teaching on the dignity of human life from conception to natural death which enjoin all Catholics, and especially legislators, jurists and those responsible for the common good of society, to work in cooperation with all men and women of good will in creating a just system of laws capable of protecting human life at all stages of its development." That was the Vatican announcement shortly after the meeting.
With an F in theology and an incomplete in history, Pelosi's Catholic GPA seems to be at an all-time low. The Catholic Church does recognize the principle of "invincible ignorance" for those who are doctrinally challenged in understanding how the church works and what faith demands of the believer. To enjoy the benefit of that compassionate principle, however, Pelosi would have to suffer from severe doctrinal deprivation (as distinct from mere opportunism or a malicious desire to harm the church to which she claims to "ardently" belong).
You're no Catherine of Siena, Nancy. Stick to your day job, where, truth be told, your grade point average is also falling.

Obama: Rescuing Dogs and Rending Babies
A profound and poignant article by Selwyn Duke from New American:
What a society talks about — and what it fails to — both speak volumes about it. And lately, the news has been replete with stories about the Obama’s new canine acquisition, a Portuguese water dog the first family has fittingly named Bo. Yet while the little curly-haired purebred is creating a tempest in a teapot — because Barack Obama said during the campaign that he intended to get a “rescued” dog, such as one from a shelter — few talk about a type of rescue to which Obama won’t even pay lip service.
Of course, it certainly is fashionable to lament the plight of abandoned animals, and for sure, no humane person wants to see any of God’s creatures suffer needlessly. Yet, shouldn’t this sublime compassion extend to His children as well? I speak of abortion.
On the very day the Obamas got their dog, more than 4,000 babies died in America’s abortion mills. In fact, Planned Parenthood reveals in its Annual Report 2007-2008 (pdf) that its "clinics" performed 305,310 abortions in 2007. It also divulges that to help it perform this work, it received $349.6 million of taxpayer money in the form of government grants and contracts for the year ending June 30, 2008. In other words, many of the abortionists who have authored the deaths of more than 50 million babies since the Roe v. Wade court ruling have been partially financed with our money.

12-Year-Old Delivers An Inspirational Pro-Life Message
I first saw this video on Marilyn's blog, and I'm glad I did. This little girl is very articulate and passionate in her speech, I was very impressed, and I even became kind of teary-eyed while watching. The 12 year old delivers a powerful message.

Pope Benedict XVI's Meeting With Pelosi

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi met Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican Wednesday morning, but may not have had a meeting of the minds if the two statements from their offices are any indication.
No journalists were at the 15-minute encounter and the Vatican and the speaker's offices have not released any photos. However, according to their statements it appears the pope and the politician attended two different get-togethers.
"His Holiness took the opportunity to speak of the requirements of the natural moral law and the Church's consistent teaching on the dignity of human life from conception to natural death which enjoins all Catholics, and especially legislators, jurists and those responsible for the common good of society, to work in cooperation with all men and women of good will in creating a just system of laws capable of protecting human life at all stages of its development," the Vatican wrote, having released the statement moments before the two met.
Several hours later, Pelosi's office gave her take on the tete-a-tete.
"It is with great joy that my husband, Paul, and I met with his Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI today," Pelosi said in a statement released hours after the meeting. "In our conversation, I had the opportunity to praise the Church's leadership in fighting poverty, hunger and global warming, as well as the Holy Father's dedication to religious freedom and his upcoming trip and message to Israel. I was proud to show his Holiness a photograph of my family's papal visit in the 1950s, as well as a recent picture of our children and grandchildren."
The pontiff has a long history of urging Catholic politicians to toe the line on abortion, and has said that those who don't shouldn't take communion. Pelosi supports abortion rights and says she's never been denied communion at her church in San Francisco.
In 2002, the Vatican issued a doctrinal note on "The Participation of Catholics in Political Life," which states rather succinctly that politicians who profess to be Catholic have a "grave and clear obligation" to oppose any law that attacks human life.
That note was approved by John Paul II but signed by none other than Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger. He's now the pope.
The speaker does not share that belief, and even got into a verbal slugfest with American bishops last August after her statements on a news program about the Church's view of when life begins.
"I would say that as an ardent, practicing Catholic, this is an issue that I have studied for a long time. And what I know is, over the centuries, the doctors of the church have not been able to make that definition. And St. Augustine said at three months, we don't know. The point is, is that it shouldn't have an impact on the woman's right to choose," she said at the time on NBC's "Meet the Press."
She then added that the Church has only held the view for 50 years or so that life begins at conception. The remarks earned her widespread corrections by Catholic clerics.

In one video Ashley Judd pleads for the saving of lives of wolves, and has probably spoken out for other animals as well, but in the other video she is pleading for donations so that woman can continue having the right to KILL their own babies, to take the life of these innocent unborn little people. What kind of a world has this become, when the life of animal if more important or valuable that another HUMAN BEING?

Chain Emails

One of the blogs I check regularly had posted an email that they had received, I'm sure it was one of those chain emails that get passed around, and I hope people keep passing it. I may have even read it before. After reading it again I thought, she's right to post the email, this should be posted in as may places as possible, you never know who may read this at just the right moment.

A worried woman went to her gynecologist and said: 'Doctor, I have a serious problem and desperately need your help! My baby is not even one year old and I'm pregnant again.
I don't want kids so close together.
So the doctor said: 'Ok, and what do you want me to do?
'She said: 'I want you to end my pregnancy, and I'm counting on your help with this.
'The doctor thought for a little, and after some silence he said to the lady: 'I think I have a better solution for your problem. It's less dangerous for you too.
She smiled, thinking that the doctor was going to accept her request.
Then he continued: 'You see, in order for you not to have to take care of two babies at the same time, let's kill the one in your arms. This way, you could rest some before the other one is born. If we're going to kill one of them, it doesn't matter which one it is. There would be no risk for your body if you chose the one in your arms.
'The lady was horrified and said: 'No doctor! How terrible! It's a crime to kill a child!''
I agree', the doctor replied. 'But you seemed to be ok with it, so I thought maybe that was the best solution.
'The doctor smiled, realizing that he had made his point. He convinced the mom that there is no difference in killing a child that's already been born and one that's still in the womb. The crime is the same!

Oral Contraceptive & Breast Cancer

Oral contraceptive (OC) use has been linked to increased risk of breast cancer, largely on the basis of studies conducted before 1990. In the Case-Control Surveillance Study, a US hospital-based case-control study of medication use and cancer, the authors assessed the relation of OC use to breast cancer risk among 907 case women with incident invasive breast cancer (731 white, 176 black) and 1,711 controls (1,152 white, 559 black) interviewed from 1993 to 2007. They evaluated whether the association differed by ethnicity or tumor hormone receptor status. After control for breast cancer risk factors, the multivariable odds ratio for 1 year or more of OC use, relative to less than 1 year of use, was 1.5 (95% confidence interval: 1.2, 1.8). The estimates were similar within age strata (<50>

Birth Control Pill Inventor Regrets
Carl Djerassi, the 85-year-old Austrian who helped invent the Pill, says his creation has led to a "demographic catastrophe." Now he tells us! Dr. Djerassi says Austrians are committing national suicide.
He's right. Take a look at this animation. By current projections, come 2050 -- that's a little more than one generation from now -- about 20 percent of Austrians will be under the age of 25. Thirty-four percent will be over 65. It's a dying nation. The coroner will rule suicide.
Same kind of animated charts for Germany, France, Italy, and Spain (which looks like a mushroom cloud, appropriately enough) -- all show similar results.
